Club Drugs

 

Club drugs are drugs that are commonly seen at night clubs among a predominantly younger club. This drugs are used to increase sensitivity, produce a heightened feeling of awareness and for their ability to increase energy levels and stamina. Four of the most common of these types of drugs are Ecstasy, GHB, Ketamine and Rohypnol.

  • Ecstasy or MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a stimulant with mood altering capabilities that increases the users sensitivity to light, sound, taste and touch. Ecstasy is addictive like cocaine and other amphetamine drugs. Because Ecstasy is a synthetic drug that is street manufactured there have been problems with overdose when taking this illicit drug.
  • GHB (gammahydroxybutyrate or gammahydroxybutyric acid) is a club drug that is abused for its sedating effects, and is a drug that is psychoactive and can produce a euphoric effect. It is fast acting and can be dangerous when used. Some of the negative side effects from GHB use include nausea, vomiting, seizures, sleepiness, dizziness, respiratory distress and coma. GHB is considered to be a date rape drug.
  • Ketamine, or ketamine hydrochloride is a drug that is commonly used by veterinarians as a surgical sedative, but is also abused as a club drug for its sedating and hypnotic effects. Like a psychedelic drug Ketamine impairs the users perceptions and can lead to hallucinations. Ketamine is an extremely dangerous drug that can lead to major and permanent health problems. Some of the serious side effects for Ketamine include: coma, brain damage and flashbacks.
  • Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) is a street of club drug that has most recently been named in the news as a date rape drug. It is used for its sedating effects, and can produce a comatose state and even death in the event that too much of the drug is administered.
